Indian classrooms mostly rely on textbooks and formal instruction to teach children to read and write. There is very little scholarly work on literacy environment that includes the availability and use of
children’s literature. It is important to address this situation because research in early literacy reveals that literacy acquisition takes place not just through formal instruction. Immersion in literacy in informal ways plays a critical role in acquiring literacy. Therefore there is urgent need to pay attention to literacy environments in multiple contexts including school and community.
